A Few Words With Uli Jon Roth
April 2019
The East Coast will get a chance to see one of the great Rock guitarists perform. Uli Jon Roth will be performing at Daryl’s House in Pawling New York on April 19th, Tupelo Music Hall in Derry New Hampshire and on April 21st in Connecticut at The Infinity Music Hall, before heading south towards New York and New Jersey and points south before a May 1st show at The Spire Center in Plymouth, Massachusetts. A very busy schedule, that he was able to take a few minutes out of and speak with me about this tour. After a brief hello and asking how his day was going (he was sitting in the back of his tour bus in Sunny Sacramento) The first thing I asked about was the three hour long set I have heard about.
Northeast Rock Review: One thing that caught my mind is you’re going to be doing a three hour set.
Uli Jon Roth: Yes
Northeast Rock Review: What exactly is the set going to be comprised of?
Uli Jon Roth: Well see it’s my 50th anniversary tour. So 50 years ago, I had my first ever show in 1968
when I was like at the age of 13, so the program reflects that you know. We’re playing music from all parts of my musical journey, including a lot of Electric Sun in the First half. Because Electric Sun had quite a following in the 80s here in America, but possibly done a tour then the project was finished, and so we basically revisiting these electric sun songs. We are also playing some of my more classical pieces like Sky of Avalon Transcendental Sky guitar and then theres a little intermission and after the intermission, I’m doing a acoustic thing on my eight string acoustic flamenco guitar and then we do a whole set o f early Scorpions classics and some Hendrix. Sounds like a very mixed bag and yes, it sounds like a long show. But we haven’t had a single complaint yet, people seem to really like it. its to look like a movie and not movies three hours and we’re playing a very diverse program. In fact for the for the die hard we even playing one extra show which is before the main show, in the late afternoon. We’re doing a VIP only concert which is devoted to my Metamorphosis Concerto, you know, and but that’s only for the people with VIP tickets. Who just can’t get enough, I guess. You know, but I like playing that piece because normally, I don’t get to play it, so its for me, it’s the fun part of the day.
Northeast Rock Review: Michael Schenker. Is there a chance that you two will be collaborating on something again soon?
Uli Jon Roth: Very unlikely, because we have a lot of mutual respect for one another but we all we both
tend to do our own thing, he is like a one man Army, you know. And as far as I know, he didn’t really enjoy jamming with other people as much as I do enough, you know. So I think that’s very unlikely. Nothing is impossible because there’s always some new projects coming out of the group.
