UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Over the last few years Mike Tramp has toured the States either acoustically or with his friend guitarist Marcus Nand. This is the first time I have seen Mike Tramp with a full band behind him since I first saw White Lion all those years ago.
For a Thursday night show at the Wolf Den, the turnout was a lot more then I was expecting it to be, with a pretty close to capacity crowd in this free, but first come first served venue. I was actually surprised by the number of vintage White Lion t-shirts I saw, even more that they still fit people thirty plus years later, Lord knows I wish I could fit into the one I got that night I saw White Lion.
The setlist was pretty was pretty standard from the last few times I have seen him live, with one or two songs changed.
The night started out with “Out With the Boys”, “Hungry”, “Lonely Nights” and “El Salvador.” Followed by “Little Fighter”, “All the Fallen Men”, “Lights and Thunder”, and an appropriately named tune for the current times, “Cry for Freedom”, “Living on the Edge”, one of my favorites “Tell Me”, “Broken Heart”, then a couple of White Lions more popular tunes, “When the Children Cry”, another favorite of mine and apparently the crowd as we all sang along with Mike for this one and he closed it out with “Lady of the Valley.”
The band sounded great, it wasn’t the original guys from the 80s except for Mike, but Marcus sounded great and the bassist Jerry Best held it down very well. On the drums for this tour is Jason Sutter, the newest addition to the gang. Mike sounded just as good as ever, sharing tidbits of White Lion and personal history with us as the show progressed. I really enjoyed this show with a full band, don’t get me wrong, I loved the acoustic shows, but was just nice to see a full electric one. They are out on the highways for a while before heading back to Europe. They are definitely a show to catch.
