Lita Ford
Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den
November 27, 2015
The Wolf Den is a small venue that holds maybe 300 or so people and the concerts they have are free. Artists such as Eddie Money, Vince Neil, Blue Oyster Cult and many more have played on this stage. This night, I was there to see one of the Maidens of Metal, Lita Ford.
Lita has become a regular here, performing at least once a year for the last 3 or 4 that I remember, and just like every other time i have been here to see her, there was a long line of fans waiting patiently in line, many of them for at least four or five hours to make sure they get inside the Wolf Den, a line I have stood in myself many a time.
Lita came to the stage to the screams of a bunch of fans of the 80s hard rock that she is so well known for. On the stage with her that night was bassist Marty O’Brien who has been her bassist for the last three years or so and a fellow New Englander, guitarist Patrick Kennison and rounding it out on the drum kit was Bobby Rock.
Her setlist for the night was a great mix of old and new material starting off with one I don’t remember hearing before, “Larger Than Life” off of Dangerous Curves, followed by a couple of newer songs, “Relentless” off of her last album “Living Like A Runaway” and “The Bitch is Back” a popular Elton John song that was also on the latest disc, followed by “Hungry” A couple of my favorite tunes were next, “ Falling In and Out of Love” co written by Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and “Gotta Let Go” off of my favorite album of her’s “Dancin On The Edge”, the album that back in 1984 made me a fan. “Back to the Cave” and then the title track of her last album, “Living Like a Runaway” followed by another cut off that disc, “Devil in My Head”. “Can’t Catch Me” a nice catchy tune she co- wrote with Lemmy from Motorhead. Then she went old school for the next couple of songs, “Out For Blood” off her first solo album and then the crowd pleasers. Introed with a story about how a soldier told her that this song got his unit thru with no casualties, she went into the Runaways classic, “Cherry Bomb” with the crowd singing along loudly, then another Runaways tune, co written by none other the Sex Pistols, “Black Leather”, My night was complete, but hers wasn’t quite done yet “Close My Eyes Forever” was next with a touch I hadn’t seen over the last couple of times I have seen her, she didn’t sing this alone, as much as I wish it would’ve been the Prince of Darkness himself, it wasn’t Ozzie. Patrick Kennison, her new guitarist, took up the reigns for his parts and breathed new life into this now classic hit. Closing out the night was the one song every soul in and surrounding the Den knew the words to, “Kiss Me Deadly”.
The band was on the money this evening, with Patrick being more than a capable replacement for Mitch Perry. You may be familiar with him from his time with Union Underground. Marty was all over the stage, full of energy or just showing off for the hometown crowd. In my opinion the highlight of the show was Bobby Rock. His prowess on the drums is undeniable and his drum solo was amazing.
Lita is constantly on the road and performing, and they all look and sound like they are having fun. I know I have said this about a lot of the bands I have covered lately, and I will take all the blame for it because to be honest lately there haven’t been any that haven’t been able to deliver when I have seen them, go see them, you won’t be disappointed.
