November 13, 2015
New Haven did not survive Friday the 13th unscathed. They were invaded by the intergalactic Scumdogs of the Universe known as Gwar, where carnage and blood filled the place called Toads Place.
Fantastic stage presence and a great sound that was for me augmented by the fact they actually seemed to be having a good time with a crowd that was very receptive to them.
But I can’t deny the fact the crowd was there for only one thing and that was to be accosted by Gwar.
A sea of white T-Shirts ready to be sacrificed to the fountains of fake blood and bodily fluids that were soon to be raining down unto them.
The evening started with “Crush Kill Destroy” with a tv screen touting the New Gwar, one of whom looked strangely like Marilyn Manson….. then towards the end of this Gwar took to the stage to the mangled strains of “Sick of You” worked into “Crush Kill Destroy” and those gathered at the front of the stage started getting what they came for…
Blood…
Copious amounts of red blood shooting out from the front of the Manson lookalike that had just been sheared off and they went wild!!!
If you have not been to a Gwar show, then you have missed out on a glorious spectacle filled with blood, guts, outrageous costumes and biting satire and comedy mixed with a surprisingly heavy metal, thrash soundtrack.
The twin guitars of Balsac The Jaws of Death and Pustulus Maximus, pierce your ears and the thundering back rhythms of bassist Beefcake the Mighty and drummer Jizmak Da Gusha perfectly balance out the monstrous vocals of lead singer Blothar. How they play as well as they do with those outfits is amazing!
Gwar has been doing this for 30 years now and are currently touring celebrating this domination of Earth till the end of November. I know I have been saying it a lot lately, but Gwar is a show not to be missed. It is fun and surprisingly great music.
